Fresh flowers are a beautiful addition to any home, but to maintain their beauty for as long as possible, it is essential to care for them properly. Below, we present 9 tips that will help you preserve your bouquet in a vase.

cut the stems at an angle

Before placing the flowers in the water, cut the stems at a 45-degree angle (diagonal). This increases the surface area for water absorption and prevents the stems from resting on the bottom of the vase, which could block water flow. The stems of tulips and Gerbera daisies should be cut horizontally.

remove leaves in the water

If the florist hasn't done so, make sure to remove any leaves that are submerged in the water of the vase. Leaves in the water can rot, leading to bacterial growth and shortening the lifespan of the flowers. Additionally, your bouquet will look nicer and the water won't get as dirty.

use a clean vase

Always use a clean vase to avoid any bacterial contamination. A clear glass or plastic vase is ideal, as you can easily see the water level and any accumulated dirt inside. Clean the vase always with bleach after using it and rinse with tap water.

Try to keep the flowers away from fruit, as fruit produces ethylene gas, which speeds up the aging of flowers. Although the combination often looks lovely, with the colours of fruit on the table next to a bouquet—don’t do it!

Regularly check the flowers to remove any that are wilting. Trim the stems again if necessary to allow for better water absorption.
