The scientific name of this popular plant is Sansevieria, belonging to the Liliaceae family. Native to Africa, Madagascar, and parts of southern Asia, this plant has a rich history. It was discovered by Vincenzo Petanga, an Italian botanist from Naples, who named it in honor of Pietro Antonio Sanseverino, a Duke of Chiaromonte who founded an exotic garden in southern Italy. However, it was later renamed Sansevieria by the Swedish botanist Thunberg, who was inspired by Raimondo di Sangro, a Neapolitan military man, inventor, and scholar.
This plant is also known by several common names, including Sword of Saint George, Mother-in-law's tongue, Sanseviera, Sansevera, and Tiger's tongue. Due to its hardiness, it is a popular choice for indoor spaces such as bedrooms, living rooms, corridors, and kitchens.

care tips
The Mother-in-law's tongue, also known as Sansevieria, is an incredibly resilient houseplant that can thrive in low-light conditions. If you place your sansevieria in a spot with direct sunlight, be aware that it may cause the leaves to turn a lighter shade of green. However, it's well-suited to indoor spaces with limited natural light.
This plant is also extremely drought-tolerant and can withstand excess heat and dry conditions. It's not demanding when it comes to water, as it tends to suffer from excess water rather than dehydration. In fact, it's best to err on the side of caution and avoid overwatering.
In terms of nutrition, sansevieria doesn't require a lot of fertilizer. A small dose during the spring or summer months is sufficient, roughly one-quarter of the recommended amount. Be cautious not to overfertilize, as this can lead to acidic soil conditions that can damage the roots.
health
Not only do Sansevieria plants bring vibrant color and warmth to your home during the day, but they also have a remarkable nighttime ability to convert carbon dioxide into oxygen. This air-purifying plant can help alleviate eye irritation and respiratory issues, making it a wonderful addition to any indoor space.
