staghorn fern on lava stone
The Staghorn Fern owes its nickname to the special shape of the leaves when they are fully developed. Originally the platicerum is from Australia, where it grows in the shade of rocky areas. The dusty layer on the leaves will let the plant evaporate less moisture si it can better withstand dry air.
volcanic stone
This platicerum in particular grows on a volcanic lava stone. Its roots have been anchored in the same stone for nourishment and in search of water. That makes this Elkhorn Fern so special. Together with the lava stone it's a very elegant and decorative item for your home.

care tips
The plant can grow anywhere in the house, but make sure that it is not standing in full sunlight. It's better that the minimum temperature does not go below 15°C and not more than 30°C. The perennial volcanic lava stone absorbs water from the bucket and so the water reaches the fern's roots. Fill the container up to 2/3 and make sure that there is always a layer of water in it. The first two years it will not be necessary to fertilize the plant, because the plant will draw nutrition from the stone itself. If the tap water in your municipality contains a lot of lime, the lava stone can turn white, so it is preferable to give the plant rainwater or mineral water.
